Things I should consider when buying my first car
Most Important - Can I afford it?
Sounds like a simple question but it's important to remember that buying the car isn’t the end of your spending! You need to take into account all the boring things like fuel economy, road tax and insurance groups. You also need to think about how much the car is going to cost to run, things like servicing costs, replacement tyres and general wear & tear.
There’s also the fun things to think about that are important for all of us. Things like can I connect my phone? Can I play my music, can I get my friends in the car, is the boot big enough for all my stuff!

What to consider when getting insured on your first car
Regardless of your circumstances you will need insurance of some kind. The level of insurance you have will usually depend on your budget, there are things you can do to reduce the costs such as naming more experienced drivers on your policy, i.e. family members. You can also choose to have some kind of monitoring device fitted, commonly known as a ‘black box’. These are usually linked to a mobile phone and send data on you’re driving style to your insurance company.
Basic car insurance is based on certain criteria.
Firstly what’s your age? This has a massive effect on you’re premium, the younger you are the higher risk the insurance companies think you are. You’re gender also has an impact on this. Regardless of your age you will need insurance of some kind. Remember you can change your level of insurance as you become more experienced and build up ‘No claims bonus’
Secondly the location of you’re car. This doesn’t just mean you’re registered address but also where you actually keep the car when you’re not driving it i.e. on the drive, in a garage, on the road.
The registered keeper of your car. This also makes an impact, registering the car in the name of a parent can help. The parent could also have a separate policy on the car in their name which can reduce the premium a first time driver may pay.
